About the Journal
Mission Statement
The Journal of Material Science (JMS) is dedicated to advancing the understanding of materials across all length scales and disciplines. Our mission is to provide a rigorously curated, freely accessible platform where researchers, engineers, and scholars can share original findings that push the boundaries of what materials can achieve. We believe that open dissemination of knowledge accelerates innovation and fosters the collaborative spirit essential to scientific progress.
Every manuscript submitted to JMS undergoes a thorough double-blind peer review conducted by recognized experts in the relevant subfield. Our editorial process upholds the highest standards of scientific integrity, reproducibility, and methodological rigor. Reviewers evaluate not only the novelty and significance of the results but also the clarity of presentation and the soundness of experimental or computational methodology, ensuring that published work meets the expectations of the international research community.
JMS is committed to bridging fundamental research and applied engineering. We welcome contributions that span the full spectrum of materials science — from first-principles calculations and phase-equilibria studies to processing-structure-property investigations and real-world performance testing. By uniting theoretical insight with practical application, the journal aims to serve as an indispensable resource for academics, industry professionals, and policymakers working to develop the next generation of advanced materials.
Scope & Topics
JMS publishes original research articles, reviews, and short communications across a broad range of materials science disciplines. The journal considers submissions in, but not limited to, the following areas:
Metals & Alloys
Ceramics & Glasses
Polymers & Soft Materials
Composites & Hybrid Materials
Nanomaterials & Nanotechnology
Biomaterials & Biocompatible Materials
Electronic & Optical Materials
Energy Materials
Computational Materials Science
Materials Characterization & Testing
Indexing & Abstracting
JMS is indexed and abstracted in the following databases and services. We are actively pursuing inclusion in additional indexing platforms as the journal grows.
Open Access Policy
JMS is a fully open-access journal. All published articles are immediately and permanently available to read, download, and share without subscription barriers.
To support the growth of open scholarship, JMS waives all article processing charges (APCs) for its initial volumes. Authors can publish their work at no cost. This policy will be reviewed periodically and any changes will be announced well in advance.
We believe that removing financial barriers to both reading and publishing is essential for equitable access to scientific knowledge. Our open-access model ensures that researchers at institutions of all sizes — and in all regions of the world — can contribute to and benefit from the latest advances in materials science.
Publication Ethics
The Journal of Material Science is committed to maintaining the highest ethical standards in scholarly publishing. Our policies are informed by the guidelines established by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), and all editors, reviewers, and authors are expected to adhere to these principles throughout the publication process.
"The integrity of the scientific record depends on the honesty and transparency of every participant in the research and publication process — from the laboratory bench to the published page."
Plagiarism and Duplicate Submission. All manuscripts are screened for textual overlap using industry-standard plagiarism detection software prior to peer review. Submissions that contain plagiarized material, or that have been simultaneously submitted to another journal, will be rejected immediately. Authors found to have engaged in such practices may be subject to sanctions, including notification of their affiliated institution.
Data Integrity and Reproducibility. Authors are expected to present their data honestly and without fabrication or selective omission. Where feasible, we encourage the deposition of raw data and analysis scripts in publicly accessible repositories. The editorial board reserves the right to request underlying data at any stage of the review or post-publication process.
Conflicts of Interest. All authors, reviewers, and editors must disclose any financial, personal, or professional relationships that could be perceived as influencing the objectivity of the work. The editor-in-chief will determine whether disclosed conflicts warrant reassignment of the manuscript to an alternative handling editor or reviewer.
History
The Journal of Material Science was founded in 2023 by an international group of materials scientists who recognized the need for a rigorously peer-reviewed, fully open-access venue dedicated to the full breadth of the discipline. From its inception, JMS was designed to combine the editorial standards of established journals with the accessibility and speed of modern digital publishing.
Since publishing its inaugural issue, the journal has grown steadily in both volume and geographic reach, attracting high-quality submissions from researchers on every inhabited continent.
